Reading History Essay
Being literate should only have one meaning, it means to be able to read, write, and speak correctly, some people can read and write, but some people don’t apply it to the way we speak. Everyday on a regular basis we always apply literacy, especially when we’re speaking, and usually when we’re writing or typing. Sometimes, what gets not only me, but many other people. Is what were the roots, the foundation, of how our language or other languages came to be. In my opinion, it first started as a grunt, when cavemen were around. Then another cavemen decided that two grunts meant something, then those grunts started to almost sound like syllables, and soon a stable language started to form. Like on my opinion on how language started, it’s nice to go back and remember what influenced me on reading. It actually wasn’t too long ago, it was in 7th grade. I didn’t like reading at all, until 3 of my friends were talking about this one book, The lightning Thief, and that was all they talked about for a whole week straight. I was getting a little annoyed, because I wanted to join in their conversation, but I had no idea what they were talking about. So, I started reading the book, and it was the best book I’ve ever read personally. The only time I had this much fun reading was probably in kindergarten, when I started reading ‘The Cat and the Hat.’ Of course, the teacher read it to us, but when she showed us the pictures in the books, it seems as my imagination runs wild, because of how unreal the stories were. Then I started to realize my favorite types of book were fantasies, fairy tales, and anything that’s especially mythological.
In elementary school I attended was Merchantville Elementary School, when reading first became something I do for fun, books that immediately caught my attention was mythological book, such as Greek, Norse, or Teutonic. Their story lines in my opinion are just incredibly fascinating, and thrilling. An old teacher at this school was Mrs.Lane, she taught me plenty of literate writing, and reading.
Few years later, the middle school I attended was Merchantville School, it goes through Pre-K through 8th, by the time I reached 8th grade, I probably read over 15 books, most about mythological stories, throughout all the books I’ve read, Jerry Spenelli was my favorite author. I read many of his books, milkweed, eggs, Maniac Magee, etc. I just love 1st person books, he describes the scenery so vividly, throughout 8th grade, my favorite genre which is mythological stories hasn’t changed, and honestly it won’t ever change.
In highschool I hope to read books that I want to choose, some teachers at my old school, gives us a book that he or she decides, and i don’t really like that, because what if I don’t like the book? Then I'll be forced to read it until the very end. Now on a regular basis, the only text that I’ve been reading is homework assignments, and anything else that involves school. I really didn’t have the time to be reading another book. My friends think I'm illiterate, and honestly, I think they’re right. I can read, and write like a literate person, but sometimes I don’t apply it to my language, then I start to speak like a person without a care in the world, and goes out to do whatever they want disregarding the law.
Now, they way I feel about reading is that, depending on the book you’re reading, your imagination runs wild with the book. I just love reading a book, and scenes and scenarios running through my head like a portable television set. I wish I was reading a book right now, but I haven’t been able to find a good book, or even read one. I’d love to read a book written by Jerry Spenilli or Joanne Harris, two of my favorite authors. I want to keep on reading because literacy is important, without literacy, we wouldn’t be able to communicate, keep on our culture, or even create order and democracy. Being literate has helped my life in a way that’s almost unnoticeable to me, being able to read a door that says, push or pull, reading instruction manuals when I need some help, and especially being able to learn from our teachers. Literacy is like a tree, because When people read one book, that’s almost like a seed, they’d either want to read another book or recommend that book to another person, which starts the tree life. Once the person who’s been recommended the book, he’d either want to read another book, or recommend that book to another person. The book is then being sprouted into a beautiful tree. Once enough people has read that one book, each people who’s read that one book, has learned a little something about literacy, whether it be how he or she will right the next time, or how he or she will speak the next time. Every time when i read a book my language improves a little bit more. That’s why any author brave enough to create a book and publish is a seed, and soon enough to be able to sprout a tree.
